SURVEILLANCE
Surveillance of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) requires a comprehensive system to detect suspected CRS cases in infants who present to a range of different health services.
Suspected cases must be investigated, with full clinical and laboratory investigation.
in developing countries (as for neonatal tetanus) CRS cases are likely to be underreported in areas and among populations where a high proportion of births occur at home and where neonatal and childhood deaths are often unreported.
In such settings, outbreak investigations can help to identify CRS cases.
Rationale for surveillance
In pregnancy can lead to (CRS) in the infant.
The birth defects associated with CRS include heart disease, blindness, deafness, and mental retardation.
All countries that include rubella vaccine in their immunization programme should conduct surveillance for CRS and rubella.
In the CRS prevention stage, disease surveillance should focus on detecting cases of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS).
In the CRS/rubella elimination phase (usually conducted in conjunction with measles elimination), case-based surveillance of febrile rash illness is necessary

Importance of surveillance
Surveillance data are used to identify groups of persons or areas in which
additional disease control efforts (such as immunization) are required to reduce
disease incidence and to evaluate the effectiveness of disease prevention
programs and policies.
9
Importance of rapid case identification
Prompt identification of suspected, probable, or confirmed cases of rubella is important to avoid exposure of susceptible pregnant women.
Rapid case identification and investigations are also important so that control measures can be initiated to prevent the spread of the disease.
